Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many players often get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems complicated initially, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing collection of wagering options and because you have numerous individuals battling for the high, along with a few shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
