Omaha Hi-Low: General Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some players often get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem difficult initially, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming assortment of wagering options and seeing that you have numerous players battling for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi-low.
