Omaha Hi-Lo: Fundamental Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi low begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complex at first, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi low provides an amazing collection of wagering choices and because you have several players shooting for the high hand, along with many battling for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha hi/lo.
