Omaha Hi Low: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players often get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
While it seems difficult at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming array of betting options and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low.
